The main cause of mortality among children in Mexico are accidents (ATS 54, July 2008). According to data from the National Population Council (CONAPO), the child population stands at 31 400000 children aged under 15 years, and represents 29.5% of the total population, a proportion which tends to decrease. The four largest metropolitan areas-Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey, Puebla and Tlaxcala-concentrated together nearly half of children aged 0 to 14 from around the country, with 4200000, the State of Mexico is the entity with largest child population. The Conapo noted that the cause of one in every four deaths among children and one in five girls between 1 to 5 years of age is an accident. Also among the population of school age (6 to 14 years) accidents are the leading cause of death. The government agency projected that by 2010 there will be in Mexico a total of 30500000 of girls and boys under 15.
