One of the most troubling contemporary issues in relation to global health is that of counterfeit medicines. "Piracy" has not only come to the field of drugs: it has done in such magnitude, the World Health Organization believes that millions of people are dying around the world in attempting to combat diseases with medications that are false useless or counterproductive.
For his part Interpol estimates that in five years this market will be, in terms of volume of money, like drug trafficking.
The flood of fake medicines could unleash new and serious health problems. For example, fake medicines have no curative capability, because they often contain minimal doses of certain substances in original versions, which causes the organisms that cause certain infectious diseases will become resistant. Moreover, in many cases the drugs are contaminated by pirates not have been produced under appropriate sanitary measures.
Until now the markets most affected are from developing countries. It is known, for example, that Southeast Asia the "pirates" represent almost 50% of the total sales of medicines.
